Witness (USAF Security Specialist Steven LaPlume, age 18 at time) and Senior Airman Wendal Palmer observed a dark cigar-shaped object approximately 300 feet in size. Initially appeared satellite-like at about 30 degrees off the horizon, moving up and down in a jittery fashion before going behind clouds. Base commanders were called and came out with cameras but the object did not reappear. Approximately one hour later, the object returned, coming low and slow from the direction of a lighthouse (east) toward the base over Rendlesham Forest. It passed overhead at an estimated 1000 feet altitude, moving west to east then reversing east to west. Witness experienced a memory gap regarding the object's departure, eventually observing it drift slowly upward into the stars until indistinguishable from them. Witness reported psychological after-effects and time/memory loss. The deputy base commander's wife was present with a Nikon camera and remarked 'Oh boy I hope we get to see one this time,' suggesting prior familiarity with such events.
